Shakeology Review: How Does it Compare to Muscle Milk, Myoplex, and Protein Shakes?

Finding the right diet, nutritional supplements, and fitness routine can be difficult – especially if you’re new to fitness. There’s a lot of trial and error, and most of the fitness regimens available require so much willpower and hard work. This is why many people quit their healthy diets and go back to their bad eating habits.

The good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way. If you’ve already started looking up ways to get fit, odds are you’ve heard of Shakeology. It’s one of the latest breakthroughs of Beachbody, the health and nutrition company behind P90X and Insanity. Basically, Shakeology is their flagship nutritional meal replacement shake, which provides people with all the nutrients they need – all within a low calorie formula.

But, does Shakeology really work or is it just full of hype? To know for sure, you need to have a complete understanding of what Shakeology is and how it compares to other fitness drinks out there.

What is Shakeology?

Simply put, Shakeology is a meal replacement drink. It helps your body absorb all the essential nutrients it needs, as well as eliminate toxins. Customers are advised to replace one meal per day with Shakeology, thus eliminating the need to prepare elaborate healthy meals and, at the same time, keeping their craving for carbohydrates in check. Its patent is currently pending, but there are existing studies and testimonials which already illustrate how effective Shakeology can be. Here are some of the things Shakeology can do for you:

  • Helps you lose weight. No need to do rigorous, overly strict dieting. Just replace one meal with Shakeology and exercise regularly.
  • Keeps you feeling energized. Relieve yourself of your dependencies on coffee, tea, energy drinks, and other stimulants. Have high energy because you’ve just consumed a nutrient-packed drink.
  • Improves your overall digestion. Because you’ll be taking on more of the essential nutrients your body needs, your digestive system will process the natural substances that it was meant to process. Taking Shakeology reduces the toxins you get from processed foods.
  • Contains lower cholesterol than a typical balanced meal. In a 90-day study of people who used Shakeology, it was shown that Shakeology had 30% less cholesterol than the typical balanced meal.

 How Does it Work?

Shakeology contains the following four nutrient groups, all of which are essential for complete fitness:

a) Protein and Essential Amino Acids

A regular, full intake of protein and amino acids helps your body build lean muscle mass. Shakeology contains whey protein isolate, which is a form of protein that your body easily absorbs. The essential amino acids found in protein also makes it easier and faster for your body to repair damaged tissue and wounds. Since Shakeology is protein-rich, it also keeps your blood sugar steady. As a result, your food cravings and hunger pangs will be greatly reduced.

b)Prebiotics and Digestive Enzymes

Prebiotics support the useful bacteria in your digestive tract, which helps you absorb nutrients better and keeps you regular.   Since your food gets broken down into nutrients more efficiently, your body can easily absorb even the most elusive minerals – such as calcium.

c) Antioxidants and Phytonutrients

Shakeology’s natural ingredients are rich in phytonutrients – a type of antioxidant which helps eliminate free radicals in your body, which may damage your cells and rapidly increase aging. With a regular dose of phytonutrients, you’ll be preventing cell damage and avoiding degenerative diseases.

d) Vitamins and Minerals

To stay fit and healthy, your body needs to absorb a wide range of vitamins and minerals – and this rarely happens even with a balanced diet. The vitamins and minerals in Shakeology help you easily replenish nutrients that are often just flushed out of your body, thus keeping you in optimal health.

Now that you know how Shakeology works, it’s time to compare it with other existing health drinks out there.

Shakeology vs. Muscle Milk

One serving of Shakeology contains only 140 calories, which beats out Muscle Milk’s 150. While both drinks contain 16 grams of protein per serving, Muscle Milk tends to scrimp on its ingredients, listing that it has both whey protein isolate and the cheaper whey concentrate. It also contains none of the essential prebiotics and enzymes found in Shakeology. On the bright side, Muscle Milk has some antioxidant vitamins – though these vitamins aren’t as rich as they are in a serving of Shakeology. For example, one serving of Muscle Milk has 105 mg of Vitamin C, while Shakeology has 180 mg. Muscle Milk also only has 875 IU of Vitamin A, while Shakeology has 5000 IU. As you can see, there’s no cutting corners on Shakeology’s end. Every drop is as nutrient-packed as promised.

Shakeology vs. Myoplex

As for Myoplex, it may be a good alternative, given that it contains a healthy amount of vitamins and minerals, but one of the problems with it is that its serving size is twice that of Shakeology. This means you get twice more calories per serving. But do you get twice more nutrients? Surprisingly, no. Myoplex has none of the phytonutrients, nor the prebiotics and digestive enzymes found in Shakeology. Also, its protein comes from a variety of sources which may not be as absorbable as the 100% whey protein isolate in Shakeology. Also, even at twice the serving size, it doesn’t contain half as much antioxidants as Shakeology does. Myoplex only contains 50% of your RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) for Vitamin A, while Shakeology contains 200%.

Shakeology vs. EAS 100% Whey Protein

If you’re looking for protein rich drinks, it’s likely that you’ve sought out EAS 100% Whey Protein as a candidate. While it does contain a lot of protein per serving, it has none of the other ingredients that make Shakeology so healthy and dense with nutrients. There are no vitamins or minerals, nor any antioxidants – it’s all just protein. I would also recommend checking out the 2010 Consumer Report (http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine-archive/2010/july/food/protein-drinks/what-our-tests-found/index.htm) which showed trace amounts of heavy metals such as cadmium, in EAS’s protein drinks. These heavy metals cause long term damage to your body over time.

As you can see, Shakeology easily outperforms the above meal replacement options. Clearly it is a healthier, more effective, and safer meal replacement drink. Given all the nutrients and benefits you get from a single serving, it also has more value for money when compared with the other drinks. It also comes with a 30 day 100% money back guarantee which these other products do not offer. To give Shakeology a try, click here.

      HI,

Which product are you taking now. I looked at a few of there products and I noticed they used artificial sweeteners for starters. They also do not have even half of the super foods contained in Shakeology. I would need to know which product your are looking at specifically and then compare. You can also go to http://www.myshakeology.com and scroll to the bottom of the page. It has a pdf of each flavor with all of the ingredients. You can compare that to what you have on the product you currently take.

      Thanks,

      Rich

It’s very disturbing to know that companies are allowed to include things in their products that can be harmful to our health! That’s why I choose Shakeology as well! I used to use it as a meal replacement for weight loss but now I just drink it as a healthy supplement to my normal daily diet. I don’t go a single day without it.

      Hi Joanne,

Agreed. I used to drink Muscle Milk all the time. Never realized it had heavy metals in it. I drink Shakeology now twice a day.

      Thanks

Hi Rich, First I have started the T25 program from Beachbody and I think it is great.

I noticed that in your own words you state, I am currently a Ruby Team Beachbody coach and a P90X Certified Instructor. Does it not seem more forthcoming to mention this at the beginning of the article instead of having readers find this for themselves at the bottom of this page in the about link under The Company heading?

The information you have provided sounds like it is coming from a non bias source when in fact you make money from your sales of Shakeology.

    • January 28, 2014 at 2:21 am #

      Tony,

I am glad you are enjoying T25. Regarding you comment on the article…on the hone page of my blog is an about section that provides my background. And while yes I am a Beachbody coach, I never stated in the article that I was not. In fact, you wouldn’t have to look to far on almost any page of my blog to find this out. I also provided references and nutritional information directly from the packages of the products I reviewed. You are more than welcome to do the same research.

I appreciate you writing in just the same and hope you continue to check back for future content.

      Thanks

      Rich
